Safety checklist
A few best practices to help keep in-person meetups safe for both buyers and sellers.
Tips for buyers
- Meet in a public, well-lit place, e.g. a bank, camera monitored area, or police department.
- Keep communication in the app whenever possible.
- Never send deposits or prepay before inspecting the device in person.
- Before paying, power on the device and confirm it has been fully erased. If you see the normal Home Screen or passcode screen, the device has not been erased and you should not take ownership until it is erased.
- Insert your SIM or complete eSIM activation before handing over payment.
- If setup shows iPhone locked to Owner or asks for the previous owner's Apple Account, do not complete the purchase. Do not take ownership of the used device if Activation Lock is enabled.
- Leave immediately if anything feels unsafe or suspicious.
Tips for sellers
- Meet in a public, well-lit place, e.g. a bank, camera monitored area, or police department.
- Keep communication in the app whenever possible.
- Do not accept unusual payment arrangements or pressure to change meetup terms at the last minute.
- Before the meetup, sign out of the device, remove it from Find My / your Apple Account, and erase all content and settings.
- Bring the erased device ready for setup so the buyer can verify activation before paying.
- Do not hand over the device until the agreed payment is confirmed.
- If anything feels unsafe, end the meetup and leave.
Why this matters
Used-device transactions have practical handoff risks: activation lock, incomplete erase flow, payment pressure, and location uncertainty. Slowing the exchange down long enough to verify the device and the environment materially reduces those risks.
If something feels wrong
Do not continue negotiating in person. Leave, move to a safer location, and document the listing or conversation details you may need for a report later.
